Normcore Style Tribe Mood Board

Normcore is a Unisex fashion trend that emphasis normal looking clothing. Clothing is considered to be normcore when it is both attractive and comfortable. Normcore fashion includes jeans, t-shirts, sweats, button-downs, and sneakers. Normcore is about authenticity. It’s a rejection of extravagance. In fall 2013, a small group of New York creatives referred to as "K-Hole" used the word Normcore to describe the new, unisex fashion trend. Normcore as a concept appeared in K-Hole's first ever issue, “Youth Mode,” published in 2013. Normcore moves away from a coolness that relies on difference to a post-authenticity coolness that opts in to sameness. But instead of appropriating an aestheticized version of the mainstream, it just cops to the situation at hand. To be truly Normcore, you need to understand that there’s no such thing as normal. Normcore, as the name implies, is about looking "normal" but in a faintly stylized, self-aware kind of way. Seminal ’90s sitcom Seinfeld is described as preceding the normcore aesthetic with its polar fleeces, stonewashed denim, and comfortable, blocky running shoes. An all-purpose normcore ’fit might feature a Patagonia, The North Face, or Uniqlo fleece over a plain tee and/or sweater, paired with basic blue wash jeans in a relaxed fit, white sports socks, a pair of New Balance kicks, and a New York Yankees cap. Initially born as a joke, the term Normcore is an amalgamation of “normal“ and “hardcore.” The idea behind it is sameness rather than standing out in a crowd. Normcore introduces sameness and grants everyone an emancipation in being nothing special.
